Summer Project: Creature Design

As our summer project, our tutors have wanted us to create creature designs out of scratch. In addition, there were also some questions for us to answer about Game Design in general and why we have chosen it etc. Also, we have researched about potential inspirations for future works and have added them onto our pdf’s.

Creature Concept

As my creature concept, I have first decided to work on a ghost type creature. I have created sketches and decided that this ghost creature eats the stars to stay alive. I have also tried to create the design spooky but in a cute way. I have drawn my creature from the front, from the back and added some different face expressions.

A while later, I have decided that this creature design was not good enough for me. So, I have re-fueled myself and opened a new page. This time, I wasn’t going to create a ghost type creature but a plant-based creature which also lives in outer space.

Silhouette Making

I have first started my process by creating 9 different silhouettes. While creating them, I have tried to use different shapes.

Design Experimentations

After I was done with my silhouettes, I have moved on to the next step which is the designing part. I have designed the silhouettes which I most liked.

After I have designed up to 4 different silhouettes, I have decided to further experiment with the 2nd design. I liked this design the most because it really looks like a plant-based creature which also has an alien aesthetic.

Character Refinements

Moving on, I have refined my original design and created different variations.

Colour Experimentations

After I was done with the refining process, I have decided to continue with my initial design. Afterwards, I have tried out different colour palettes onto my creature.

After I have tested out different colours on my creature, I have decided that I liked the first palette the most since it reminds me of nature. So, I have decided to move further with this colour palette.

Final Design

After I have completed the colouring process, I have moved on to render my creature design.

Splash Art

As an addition, I have decided to create a small splash art for my creature. This was not required by our tutors but I wanted to explore more of my creature. I really liked how it turned out.
