Games Art – Seven Deadly Sins

History of Seven Deadly Sins

The seven deadly sins were first compiled by Pope Gregory I around the year 600. They are pride, greed, lust, wrath, gluttony, envy, and sloth. Gregory also compiled a list of the seven virtues: faith, hope, charity, justice, prudence, temperance, and fortitude. The Bible would validate all of these concepts, but nowhere are they recorded in a list like this and nowhere in the Bible are they specifically referred to as the seven deadly sins or seven virtues. They do not pre-date the Ten Commandments which were given at Mt. Sinai around 1450 B.C.

It is probably true that they were used extensively to teach principles from God’s Word, particularly in the centuries before the invention of the printing press when the Bible was not available for the common man to read and study.

Greed

Greed is the desire for material wealth or gain, ignoring the realm of the spiritual. It is also called Avarice or Covetousness. Greed is also linked with the frog and the color yellow.

As for my Seven Deadly Sins, I have decided to go with the “Greed” one. Among the all, I have found Greed closer to myself as I feel like that way sometimes. When I’m usually angry, I get an urge of greed and want to vomit my anger everywhere even if I don’t need to. This also happens with other emotions as well like excitement or sadness. So, I want to reflect my inner anger and greed feeling into a character.

Inspiration

My main inspiration behind in the choosing of “Greed” is from the characters of the game called “League of Legends”. There are several characters in the game like Mordekaiser, Vladimir, Syndra, Zed etc. who are all greedy in terms of desire. I will take these characters as my main reference and create my own greedy character.

Moodboard

After I have researched about Greed, I have moved on to the next step which is creating a Moodboard about it. I have created my Moodboard in Padlet. In total, I have found about 12 images in total. The stuff which I have researched more deeply about Greed was around human spirit, evilness, death, selfishness etc.

Silhouettes

As our first design task, I have created my silhouettes for my upcoming character. I have done around 8 silhouettes in total. Since my character is going to be a female, I haven’t sketched any male characters. I have also tried to reflect “dominancy” through my silhouettes as I am aiming for my character to be really dominant and greedy when it comes to hunting people.

While creating, I have thought about my emotions when I get angry as I try to reflect my inner side into this character.

Rough Sketches

After completing my character sihouettes, I have moved on to the next step which is creating rough sketches of my possible character designs. I have created around 6 sketches in total, with making the designs similar to each other.

My rough sketches

After I have completed my rough sketches, I have chosen the design which I wanted to continue with. The design which I have chosen is the sixth one. Out of all, I have found that particular design to be the most greedy and evil looking.

As my next step, I have created 4 different refinements onto the character design which I have decided on. Since it’s an evil and a greedy character, I have added horns and ears to reflect the “evil” feeling.

Refinements

My Refinements

After finishing the refinements, I have decided to go with the first design out of all. I really liked the third design which has horns, but also thought that the design looks too much compared to the first one.

Lineart

Moving on, I have created the lineart of my character. I really liked her final design as my lineart helped it to look even better.

Colour Experimentations

After I have finished the lineart, I have moved on to the next step which is experimenting with colours. My character is representing the sin “Greed”, so I have decided to go with two main colours of evilness which are “black” and “red”, and a small mixture of pink and purple. Then, I have searched for other colours which could also suit my character.

As a result, I have first tried with the colour tonnes of purple. Then, with blue and green. After I have experimented with other colours, I couldn’t suited them right to my character. So, I have decided to go with the colours which I have chosen in the beginning.

Final Render / Design

As my last step, I have moved on to complete my design and the rendering process. Since I have a semi-realistic art style in general, I wanted to use this style in this character as well. As my final render, I have deleted the lineart and coloured it in a more “3D” type way to make it look more realistic type, but in a illustrative way.

I am really happy with the final result as I believe that I have nailed the colours very well and the design suitable with the sin I have chosen.
